A method for controlled target strength measurements of pelagic fish, with application to European anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicolus ) ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Berger, Laurent; Le Bouffant, Naig; Coail, Jean-yves; Vacherot, Jean-philippe; De La Bernardie, Xavier; Moriniere, Pierre; Lys, Elisabeth; Schwab, Romain; Petitgas, Pierre.
Measuring fish target strength (TS) in the wild is challenging because: (i) TS varies versus physical (orientation relative to the incident sound wave, size, and depth) and physiological fish attributes (maturity and condition), (ii) the target species and its aforementioned attributes are difficult to assess in near real time, and (iii) in the case of packed fish schools, accepted echoes may originate from multiple unresolved targets. We propose a method for controlled TS measurements of densely packed small pelagic fish during daytime, based on the joint use of a Remotely Operated Towed Vehicle, “EROC”, with a pelagic trawl fitted with a codend opening system, “ENROL”. EROC, equipped with a 70-kHz split-beam echosounder (Simrad EK60) and a low-light...

Bionomie benthique subtidale en Baie de Douarnenez ArchiMer
Blanchet, Aline; Chevalier, Claire; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Hamon, Dominique.
Following a preliminary mapping survey using a combination of acoustic techniques, spatial patterns of sedimentologic and biological characteristics of the Bay of Douarnenez were studied in 2001 from a series of grab samples and underwater video recording aiming at calibrate the acoustic facies of the bottom and at characterized them from a biological point of view. Results obtained from community structure analysis showed that four principal ecological groups dominate : The coarse sands community with Branchiostoma lanceolatum, Glycymeris glycymeris and Glycera lapidum, the fine to medium sand community with Nephtys cirrosa, Ophelia borealis and Gastrosaccus spinifer, the mixed muddy sand and gravel community with Amphiura filiformis, Edwardsia sp. and...

Description and phylogenetic position of Plagiolemma distortum sp. nov., a new raphid diatom (Bacillariophyceae) from French coastal waters ArchiMer
Nezan, Elisabeth; Bilien, Gwenael; Boulben, Sylviane; Mertens, Kenneth; Chomerat, Nicolas.
A new marine raphid diatom, Plagiolemma distortum Nézan, sp. nov. is described from plankton samples from the Atlantic Ocean, south Brittany (north-western France), where it was regularly observed, but never in high abundances. Cells have an unusual and complex shape under light microscopy (LM) depending on their position and orientation. The two valves are highly vaulted and narrow in width (transapical axis). Cells contain four complexly lobed plastids and a variable number of refractive granules without particular localization. In addition, capsules containing motile cells were observed. Ultrastructural details of the frustules were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The girdle bands are simple. Each valve possesses a sigmoid raphe...

Estimating Synaphobranchus kaupii densities: Contribution of fish behaviour to differences between bait experiments and visual strip transects ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Lorance, Pascal.
Kaup's arrowtooth eel Synaphobranchus kaupii is a small-bodied fish and an abundant inhabitant of the European continental slope. To estimate its local density video information using the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Victor 6000 were collected at three locations in the Bay of Biscay slope. Two methods for estimating local densities were tested: strip transect counts and bait experiments. For bait experiments three behaviour types were observed in about equal proportions for individuals arriving near the seafloor: moving up the current towards the ROV, moving across the current and drifting with the current. Visible attraction towards the bait was the highest for individuals swimming against the current (80%) and about equally low for the other two types...

Evaluation of the impact of printed matter, video, and multimedia on the learning/teaching process in tropical diseases J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
SARMENTO E SOUZA,M. F.; CATANEO,A.; BARRAVIERA,B..
This study evaluated the impact of printed matter, video, and multimedia on the learning/teaching process in Tropical Diseases. Eighty-four of 90 fourth-year medical students at Botucatu School of Medicine of UNESP were evaluated. The students received a kit containing a textbook, a video, and a CD-ROM on the Clinical Study of Tetanus to prepare a seminar on the subject. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire, which led to the following conclusions: 67.86% read the textbook, 91.66% watched the video, and 77.38% explored the CD-ROM. These results were obtained observing the total number of students using each different media. When asked which of these media contributed most, the CD-ROM came out on top. The authors stress that this learning...

Small-scale spatial and temporal interactions among benthic crustaceans and one fish species in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Le Loch, Francois; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
In the summer of 2004, a video survey was carried out in the northern part of the central mud bank (Grande Vasiere) of the Bay of Biscay to study the small scale relationship between the dominant crustacean megafauna Nephrops norvegicus, Munida rugosa and Goneplax rhomboides and juvenile hake (Merluccius merluccius). Using a towed body, high-resolution videos were recorded in six sampling sites. Statistical modelling using generalised additive models (GAM) revealed variations in activity patterns for two species. More N. norvegicus were observed outside their burrows at dawn and somewhat at dusk (no observations during night) while G. rhomboides was less observed in the morning. In addition, reduced spatial overlap between G. rhomboides and N. norvegicus...

The impact of multimedia on teaching tropical medicine J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Sarmento e Souza,M. F.; Ferreira,A. S. S. B.; Martinez,J. C.; Barraviera,B..
This study evaluated the impact of multimedia in the information transfer of subjects specific to Tropical Diseases - Tetanus and Snake Envenoming. We evaluated the autonomous learning process of 76 fourth-year medical students at Botucatu School of Medicine of UNESP, using printed matter, video, and CD-ROM. The students were submitted to a specific test, which was repeated approximately one week later. They were divided into groups and received a kit containing a textbook, a video, and a CD-ROM. These materials were used for out-of-class study. Before the second test, the students gave a seminar, where they discussed and resolved their doubts with their professor. The results of the first test showed averagesbetween 4.27±1.41 and 6.41±1.61. The second...
